Green Arteries: Connecting Limassol’s Neighborhoods to the Sea

Summary
This proposal aims to create a network of shaded, pedestrian-friendly "Green Corridors" connecting residential neighborhoods north of the highway directly to the Molos and the Marina, encouraging walking and cycling while reducing traffic congestion.

The Problem
Limassol has grown rapidly, leading to severe traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours. Currently, the city is designed primarily for cars. Walking or cycling from neighborhoods like Mesa Geitonia or Agia Fyla to the city center is difficult due to narrow sidewalks, lack of shade during the hot summer months, and safety concerns regarding vehicular traffic.

The Solution
We propose the pilot implementation of two "Green Arteries"—vertical routes running North-to-South that prioritize pedestrians and cyclists.

The intervention includes:

  • Tree Planting: Planting mature, native trees along these routes to provide natural shade and lower urban temperatures.

  • Protected Lanes: Installing physical barriers to create dedicated bike and scooter lanes.

  • Smart Lighting: Installing solar-powered, motion-sensor lighting for safety at night.

  • Parklets: Converting occasional street parking spots into small resting areas with benches and water fountains.

Why this matters

  1. Traffic Reduction: By making alternative transport safe and comfortable, we reduce the number of cars entering the city center.

  2. Public Health: Encourages active lifestyles and reduces exhaust fumes in residential areas.

  3. Economic Boost: Walkable streets are proven to increase foot traffic for small local businesses and cafes along the route, rather than just big retailers with parking lots.

Estimated Cost & Location

  • Location: Pilot phase focusing on the axis parallel to Anexartisias Street or connecting the Linear Park to the sea.

  • Target Audience: Commuters, students, and families.
